Famous Virginians of the 20th century Section 3

Harry f. byrd , Sr. Byrd was a Senator and Governor of Virginia. Byrd is well known for a “Pay As You Go” policy for road improvements, where roads would only be added in VA when Virginia could afford to pay for them. (This helped Virginia’s economy.) He is also known for modernizing Virginia’s state government. When the US ordered all schools to desegregate (Brown v. Board of Education), Byrd was a senator for Virginia. He led the “Massive Resistance” movement to block the integration of Virginia schools.

Oliver w. hill Oliver W. Hill was a lawyer and a civil rights leader. He worked for equal rights of African Americans. As a lawyer, he played a key role in the Brown v. Board of Education decision.

Maggie l. walker Maggie L. Walker was the first African American woman in the United States to establish a bank and become a bank president. She worked to provide opportunities for her African American community.

a. Linwood Holton, jr. A. Linwood Holton, Jr. was a governor of Virginia. Holton promoted racial equality and appointed more African Americans and women to positions in state government than previous governors.

L. Douglas wilder L. Douglas Wilder was elected governor of Virginia in 1990. He was the first African American to be elected a state governor in the United States.

Arthur r. ashe, jr. Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. was the first African American winner of a major men’s tennis singles championship. Growing up in Virginia during the time of segregation, Ashe had experienced discrimination. After he became famous in his sport, he wrote books about discrimination in sports, & he was a meaningful spokesperson for social change.
