CIFOR Priorities Annual Meeting 2017

What do we need? To do this in a transparent way we will need to have a shared understanding of the purpose and use for these priorities, some agreed process or criteria for establishing priorities, the opportunity to contribute knowledge and information to applying the process or criteria, shared planning for translating these into action and integrating these into our operations, agreed process for tracking effectiveness and reviewing the relevance of the priorities.

CIFOR Priorities Workshops that aim to: reach agreement on the purpose and use for CIFOR’s priorities agree on a process and criteria for developing a shared set of institutional CIFOR priorities attempt to apply this process to produce a draft set of shared priorities reflect on how we can collaborate around these types of priorities

Group task In small groups reflect on what was said and discuss (20mins): What do you think the purpose of CIFOR’s priorities should be? How do you think they should be used within the organisation?

What should we consider in setting priorities? Scientifically? Foresight analysis Others? Pragmatically? Follow trends in donor investment Follow trends in existing CIFOR funding successes Our existing competencies and capacities Strategically? How are we most likely to achieve development results (mobilizing around hot-topics, policy development windows, Producing long-term knowledge for future needs Or a weighted combination of all of the above?

What should we consider in setting priorities? Brainstorm considerations or criteria that should be used to determine common 3 – 5 year priorities for CIFOR 20mins: As a group brainstorm possible criteria. Group facilitator will write one idea per card 10mins: Individually write down any final suggestions - one idea per card We are not yet asking what the priorities should be – just what we think should be taken into account when we set them!

Review draft criteria Circulate around the room and reflect on the draft set of criteria that are being suggested 1. How important are they? Each person will get 5 orange dots Individually consider what are the 5 most critical considerations and place your dots accordingly 2. What needs refinement? Please add comments and suggestions for refinement

Task: Information gathering Each draft criteria has been allocated a facilitator who will work with smaller groups to harvest information on each criteria Find a criteria that you want to make a significant contribution to developing Spend 20mins consolidating your groups knowledge and insight into what information we should consider when making a judgement about where to focus our efforts in relation to this criteria After 20mins, the group host stays with their station but everyone else is free to circulate around the room, add to and build on to the knowledge base at each station.
