Those Terrible Pharisees! Concepts of Authority Those Terrible Pharisees! Lesson two in an occasional series dealing with some aspect of Bible authority. Prepared from scratch and preached on April 24, 2011 am Print Slides: 1,2,3,5,7,8

Neo-Pharisees Faithful Christians today are commonly called Pharisees by the religious world in general, members of institutional churches, and some who object to sermons exposing moral sin and doctrinal error. Legalist - Webster defines legal as: “deriving authority from or founded on law”; “conforming to or permitted by law or established rules”. So then, a legalist is one who derives his authority from law, or founds his authority on law. The true legalist conforms to the law or established rules.

Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Hebrews 8:4-5 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

Jesus’ Condemnation of the Pharisee (mark 7:1-13) They hypocritically replaced divine law with human traditions Left the law of God (vs. 8) Substituted the tradition of men (vs. 8) Rejected God’s commandments to keep their traditions (vs. 10-13) They did this with “many such things” (vs. 13) They were never admonished by Jesus for keeping the law (cf. Matthew 23:23-24)

Matthew 23:23-24 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!”

Who is the PHarisee? (Matthew 23) The one who binds on others what he is unwilling to do (1-4) The one who practices his faith to be seen of men (5-7) The one who exalts himself (9-12) The one who keeps only the part of the law that suits him (23-24) The one who is a hypocrite in the profession of his faith (27-28)

Conclusion None of the sins of the Pharisee involve the careful obedience of God’s commands. We can be “legalists”, and not be pretentious, arrogant, hypocritical, or guilty of binding the traditions of men. “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.”
