Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar IB Global Politics

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar Carefully study the two cartoons in Sources A and B. In this lesson we are going to consider conflict in relation to the Rohingya people in Myanmar (also known as Burma). Based on your interpretation of the cartoons, as well as your knowledge where appropriate, create a diagram (chart, map, etc.) that shows your current understanding of the situation. By the end of the lesson, your diagram should be much more detailed.

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar Based on all of the evidence presented, we should be able to answer the following question: “To what extent is the conflict affecting the Rohingya in Myanmar/Burma based on identity?”

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar SOURCE A:

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar SOURCE B:

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar SOURCE C: Read the article from the Guardian newspaper. After reading this article, let’s revisit our definitions of conflict, based on the Heidelberg Institute’s criteria. Do you feel this meets the criteria for a conflict and, if so, which category of conflict?

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar SOURCE D: Read the article from the Sumter Item. What does this add to our understanding? Does it contradict or support any of the other sources we have looked at? Update your diagram as appropriate based on Sources C & D.

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar Using YOUR sources: You have 10-15 minutes, working in pairs, to find one more source that adds to our understanding of the issue and that helps to answer the question: “To what extent is the conflict affecting the Rohingya in Myanmar/Burma based on identity?”

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar This information is taken from the Council on Foreign Affairs (CFR) website.

Identity Based Conflict in Myanmar Read the article “What forces are fueling Myanmar’s Rohingya Crisis? You are expected to take the time to read and familiarize yourself with this article in order to use this as a supporting case study for the IB Global Politics Exam.
