Masdar City Located in the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. Estimated to cost $20 billion. Hopes to be the a zero-carbon, sustainable, car-free city.

Energy Capturing solar energy and using it to heat domestic water. Solar energy power plant built across 22 hectares of the desert and provides 30% of cities overall energy requirements. Energy also provided by a $2 billion hydrogen power plant. Completely powered by renewable energy – 20% generated on site. City is kept cooler by using reflective coating on buildings and use of wind towers that draw droughts throughout the city without using energy. Up to 20°c cooler then Abu Dhabi.

Waste All the waste is sent through waste chutes and separated into dry recyclables, wet recyclables and residuals. Reduces the waste sent to landfill sites. More being recycled so less resources wasted/less new resources needed to be found. E.g. wet recyclables used to make compost, dry recyclables used to make new materials such as paper and metal.

Transport Public transport provided by electric busses and cars as well as light rail or metro lines. Private vehicles are kept in parking lots outside of the city. The train lines also provide access to the wider metropolitan area, such as Abu Dhabi.

London The Mayor wants London recognised as a world leader in improving the environment locally and globally – [

Pollution Low emission zones – pay to drive in these areas if you have a heavy diesel vehicle. Payment varies, however fines are up to £1000. This is estimated to have produced a 20% decrease in particulate emissions, and 10% in NO 2 As of 2012, taxis that are over 15 years old are be considered unfit for use, as they are likely to produce far greater quantities of CO 2 and NO 2 than newer vehicles. Dust suppressants are particular sticky coatings added on to roads that chemical bond with the chemicals produced from exhaust fumes. They are said to reduce road emissions by 10-14%. Though they could be used to drastically lower emissions, several charities accuse the Mayor of London of using these suppressants only around air monitoring devices in order to make the air seem cleaner.

RE:NEW A programme in London to retro-fit houses to increase domestic energy efficiency. Do this by providing loans for: draught proofing, double glazing and encouraging the use of renewable energy (solar panels, wind turbines). Places legal obligations on large energy providers to use more energy efficient measures. (E.g. helping provide insulation to consumers and cheaper, more efficient boilers). They are also providing water saving devices along with insulation etc. to improve water efficiency. (It currently accounts for 23% of domestic energy usage).

Waste Many London boroughs, like Harrow, help people divide up domestic waste by using colour coded bins: New public bins around central London also have dividing slots, so to ensure that papers and plastics can be recycled while organic waste can be used for compost or fuel. Around £30 million was saved in 2010 thanks to recycling and efficient use of waste. Blue Bin: Plastic cases/bottles/containers, cans, cardboard, paper Brown Bin: Organic waste (e.g. leftover food), garden waste and clippings Green Bin: Over, non recyclable household waste
