SCVOA HANDLING CONFRONTATIONS WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOL BOX? 1/8/2017 GAME MANAGEMENT SCVOA HANDLING CONFRONTATIONS WHAT’S IN YOUR TOOL BOX?

What is “Game-Flow” Game moves along, few delays Stays on schedule The officials maintain a good tempo Teams adhere to the time between sets & time-outs Substitutions are fluid with little delay Score Table staff are proficient & pick up the changes quickly SCVOA JUNE 2017

Why is it Important to Manage the “Flow” of the Game 1/8/2017 Why is it Important to Manage the “Flow” of the Game Officials Can Control Officials Can NOT Control Arrive on time to the contest Game ball shaggers Efficient reporting to the scorer/tracker Business-like interaction with team staff & host school staff Rule knowledge to be able to explain something briefly & correctly Non-verbal communication between officials Numerous served balls hit out of the court Coaches or spectators who know us wanting to socialize Court issues that need to be fixed prior to the contest Lots of substitutions Coaches who want to challenge judgment calls constantly SCVOA JUNE 2017

How can we accomplish this? What tools do we have? Time limits – between sets, time outs Use of cards to control extended unsporting acts Our own awareness that something is getting out of hand (on the court, the score table, spectators, team benches) Our own presentation style. Bring a business attitude to the contest to manage it professionally SCVOA JUNE 2017

What’s the Risk if we don’t manage it …. Potential for increased conflict with coaches and players More potential for warnings and possible ejections Lack of concentration by the officials Longer matches Bad for participants & fans Disjointed play that lacks flow and is full of delays, discussions and questions…. SCVOA JUNE 2017

…is to improve the Presence and Demeanor of Our Goal …is to improve the Presence and Demeanor of All SCVOA OFFICIALS As an officiating team we will consistently project ourselves as calm and confident professionals SCVOA JUNE 2017
