Be Sober Alternate translations may have “be alert” or “be of sound mind” There needs to be some common sense (Prov. 28:26) Be able to make proper distinctions (Heb. 5:14) What else Peter did have to say: Maintain a good perspective (1 Peter 1:13) Be wary of the devil (1 Peter 5:8)

Watch Unto Prayer The Lord is receptive (1 Peter 3:12) Our faith is a factor (Matt. 21:22) One suggestion is “be calm, collected in spirit” Continue in prayer (Lk. 18:1; 1 Thess. 5:17)

Fervent Love “Stretched out” – indicates extending one’s self Not optional (1 Thess. 4:19; 1 Jn. 4:21) A proof of discipleship (Jn. 13:34-35) With sincerity (1 Peter 1:22; Rom. 12:9a)

Service Hospitality Originally a cultural need (Rom. 16:5; Philm. 2) Now more of a social practice Gifts Not always spiritual (Rom. 12:6ff) Differing abilities (ministering, speaking, etc.) Let God be glorified (Phil. 2:13)
