Should I sign up for UW credit for this course? You decide…
What are the facts? $352 is the cost: For the 2013-14 school year, the cost of a UWHS course is $310, plus a $42 registration fee. You have the opportunity to earn 5 actual UW credits for this lab science course (ESS 101) on a UW transcript, with a UW grade. You get a UW net ID. You get access to the UW libraries and their electronic catalogs and research resources during the course. You are a UW student for the quarter, and can present at or attend UW geology department student research presentations.
KEEP IN MIND Registering for UW credit means you are planning to spend more than the usual time for a high school class on this course outside of class, you are self-motivated, and UW REGISTRATION IS TOTALLY OPTIONAL. Grading differences: Your UW grade will NOT count homework, and your midterms and finals will be worth 20% on your UW transcript. For your MIHS grade, HW is 10%, and the midterms/finals are 10%.
Why might I choose NOT to sign up for UW credit? You are concerned that the grade you expect to earn in this class is not what you want on a permanent, official UW transcript. (There are Pass/No Credit and Withdraw options, but those aren’t as desirable as a grade, generally) Cost. You don’t need any extra pressure in your life. Other?
Why might I choose NOT to sign up for UW credit? If you did not earn a B+ in Biology and B+ in both Chem 1 and Phys 1, or did not pass the Biology, Algebra 1 and Geometry EOCs, you should also think seriously about whether or not you are willing to put in work for this science class before registering for UW credit. If you forget to register by the due date, that is probably a good sign that you should probably NOT have signed up for UW credit anyway.
October 11, 2013. Registration materials are due, postmarked to UW, by WHEN do I have to decide? Registration materials are due, postmarked to UW, by October 11, 2013.
