Management FUNCTIONS

Objectives Today you will… Identify and apply industry terminology. List and describe the five functions of management.

Bellwork Management Leading Planning Staffing Organizing Controlling On the cognitive dictionary worksheet, write each word in the appropriate box on worksheet: Management Planning Organizing Leading Staffing Controlling 3

Key Terms Management: The team of people who make decisions for the business. Planning: Setting goals and developing methods to meet those goals. Organizing: Dividing the tasks to be done into divisions and departments in order to accomplish tasks in the most efficient way.

Key Terms Leading: Influencing people to accomplish the goals of a business. Staffing: All the activities to hire and keep workers. Controlling: Making sure a business accomplishes what it set out to accomplish.

PLANNING Setting goals and developing methods to meet those goals. A plan is a record of the decisions made about the goals and the methods to meet them.

PLANNING Planning has three time frames. Before the business is started, Day-to-day, And the future.

PLANNING Before a business is started, management has to decide on Concept Décor Level of service Location, etc.

PLANNING Day to Day Day-to-day planning is the actual running of the business – often called the operations.

PLANNING Future planning concerns plans for the future of the business. Future planning helps the business decide how to grow and how to keep up with changes. Plans for the future are often made for a specific time span.

ORGANIZING Organizing consists of designing the internal structure of the business. The manager will study the tasks that need to be done and then decide how to use employees to get the tasks done in the most efficient way.

ORGANIZING Organizing a business often involves dividing up the tasks to be done into divisions or departments.

ORGANIZING Then, the managers are hired to manage the divisions and departments. Those managers then organize their division or department.

ORGANIZING They study the tasks that need to be done and decide how to use employees to get the tasks done.

Staffing includes the following… Recruiting Hiring Training Scheduling Evaluating Compensating

STAFFING - Recruiting Recruiting: process of looking for qualified workers.

STAFFING - Hiring Hiring: process of learning about job applicants and deciding whether to offer them the job.

STAFFING - Training Training: providing specific education to help workers do their jobs.

STAFFING - Scheduling Scheduling: deciding which workers perform which tasks at what times.

STAFFING - Evaluating Evaluating: Determining whether a worker is doing a good job, providing guidance to help workers, and letting go workers who are doing inadequate jobs.

STAFFING - Compensating Compensating: determining how much each worker should get paid and providing a benefits package.

LEADING Leading consists of influencing people to accomplish the goals of the business. The process of leading is often called leadership.

LEADING Leading involves creating a positive work atmosphere.

LEADING Leading includes communicating clearly and giving feedback.

LEADING Leading also includes listening to co-workers and solving problems.

CONTROLLING Controlling is making sure that the business accomplishes what it set out to accomplish. If the business is not meeting its goals, management must then take corrective steps.

Controlling usually consists of five steps: Set measurable goals. Measure results. Compare results with goals. If results fall short of goals, find out why. Take corrective action.

CONTROLLING - Example A goal might be for a room attendant to clean 20 rooms per shift. The manager counts how many rooms each attendant cleans per shift. The manager will then investigate why it’s taking longer to clean the rooms.

CONTROLLING - Example The manager may discover that the room attendants are running back and forth to the supply room. The manager will then work with the attendants to develop a way to cut down this waste of time.

Closure On a sticky note, please write down which of the five functions you think would be the hardest to manage and why. 30
