The importance of training in the field Training workshops at national and local level can be used to: develop and disseminate strategies, particularly through training government and NGO representatives together achieve participation and gather feedback from stakeholders, and to work this feedback into strategic and programme planning agree and communicate standards, principles and building codes Training should be seen as a continuous event, allowing facilitators to gather and disseminate information across agencies (no notes)

Step 1: assess stakeholders Participants for the training event could include the following stakeholders: shelter specialists generalist coordinators specialists from other sectors national and local government coordination bodies national and local line ministries community representatives built environment specialists (builders, contractors, architects, engineers, planners) (no notes)
Step 2: develop learning objectives Learning objectives for a shelter training event may include: increasing range of response options increasing technical knowledge capacity building through achieving a shared understanding of the sector or technical activities stakeholder communication feedback on the strategy sharing of best practice identifying challenges and opportunities achieving community and government participation (no notes)
Step 3: define scope of training Training events should be seen as part of a programme which can comprise: strategic, programme and project development workshops follow-on strategic, programme and project implementation workshops single workshops for different types of stakeholders at different levels rolling programmes regional workshops standby resources and capacities (no notes)
Step 4: structure the agenda When developing the agenda for the course, be sure to: mix practical and theoretical material group sessions around themes if running training in the field, be sure to identify decisions and actions to be taken later offer a context for the training material and provide numerous tangible examples prepare materials for all levels of experience (no notes)
Step 5: develop and modify materials When developing a training workshop event: Pre-event survey training needs before arrival with an expectations form arrive many days beforehand, both to understand training needs and to modify materials accordingly During the event participants list powerpoint sessions feedback forms exercises handouts After the event expectations met form followed by evaluation feedback (no notes)
Step 6: select participants When inviting participants to the training event, you may want to consider providing the following information: point of contact details travel information accommodation details agenda for the training financial information, such as expenses or per diems any visas required background reading material (no notes)
Step 7: prepare the venue Details when preparing a venue can really impact on the quality of the event, be sure to: book the venue in advance, ensuring it meets your requirements determine if there are lunch facilities arrange all audio and visual requirements, eg digital projector, screen, extension cable, and an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) ensure there are adequate writing materials, including flip charts (one per group) and other resources check if there is an outside area for practical exercises plan a group event, such as a dinner (no notes)
Step 8: run the event During the event, be sure to: provide an overview with an introduction and housekeeping matters highlight findings from the expectations sheets monitor each day to see how participants are reacting to the material – this must be followed up listen to the needs of individuals as well as the group be prepared to change and adapt sessions according to need ask participants about personal objectives evaluate the course and revisit learning strategy (no notes)
Step 9: after the event After the event, be sure to: capture and disseminate any decisions and actions resulting from the event share contact details with those willing to share share all training materials re-evaluate learning strategy write an evaluation report (no notes)
