Challenge #1

A look at REFERRAL DATA….

A Look at DETENTION DATA… (Poor Choice Slips)

Why PBIS for Adams? To make our behavior system easier and more efficient Establish a consistent, school-wide system without adding to the work load for staff members To reduce the quantity of discipline referrals, suspensions, and detentions Supported by our Burke Group audit School-wide PBS is becoming the norm. *5300 schools across the nation

And Most Importantly… To further our positive school climate To establish procedures to minimize problem behavior by teaching social behaviors just as we teach academic behaviors To focus on pre-teaching behavior and preventative discipline Many teachers at Adams are already doing many of these practices!!

What is School-wide Positive Behavior Support? School-wide PBS is: A systems approach for establishing the social culture and individualized behavioral supports needed for schools to be effective learning environments for all students. Evidence-based features of PBIS Prevention Define and teach positive social expectations Acknowledge positive behavior Arrange consistent consequences for problem behavior On-going collection and use of data for decision-making Continuum of intensive, individual interventions. Administrative leadership – Team-based implementation (Systems that support effective practices)

What this will look like for Adams next year: Goals: Develop 3-5 positively and clearly stated expectations (rules) that are well known to all school members. Create a flow chart to define which behaviors can be handled within the school environment, and which should be made an office referral. Create a matrix that defines what each expectation looks like within any given school environment. i.e. classroom, playground, cafeteria, hallway Teach these expectations across all environments at the start of the year and continually throughout the year.

Continuum of School-Wide Instructional & Positive Behavior Support Tertiary Prevention: Specialized Individualized Systems for Students with High-Risk Behavior ~5% Primary Prevention: School-/Classroom- Wide Systems for All Students, Staff, & Settings ~15% Secondary Prevention: Specialized Group Systems for Students with At-Risk Behavior ~80% of Students

Challenge #3

Thoughts on PBIS *PBIS focuses on prevention *PBIS is not a specific program or curriculum; it’s a general approach to preventing problem behavior *Expectations are the same school-wide, specific management in each setting can look different.
