History Founded by Lord Baltimore (Cecil Calvert) in 1632 Founded as a safe haven for English Catholics being persecuted in England Act of Religious Toleration- Granted freedom of religion to Catholics only, but led to further arguments between different religions Bacon’s Rebellion- Armed rebellion (1676); led by Nathaniel Bacon against Governor William Berkeley.

Government House of Burgesses- first governing body to flourish in America Made laws, which could be vetoed by either the governor or the directors of the Virginia Company, was eventually repealed in 1624 when Virginia became a royal colony Similar to the House of Representatives
