Warm Up February 6, 2019 What is energy? What is the difference between matter and energy? What are two different types of energy that you have learned about in the past? Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 -TSWU how energy can be transformed from one form to another. -TSWU that during an energy transfer, most energy lost is turned into unwanted heat energy. Essential Question: -What are the 6 different forms of energy? -What form of energy is most energy lost to?

What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. There are six forms of energy: -Mechanical energy -Chemical energy -Nuclear energy -Thermal energy (heat) -Electrical energy -Electromagnetic energy (light) DQ: We learned about the law of conservation of mass. What do you think the law of conservation of energy is? Energy is not created or destroyed in an energy transfer, it just changes form. Disc Ed Video: Transformations of Energy 2:59 USB

Forms of Energy - DEMO What forms of energy can you identify in turning on and off the flashlight? Batteries in a flashlight: chemical energy  electrical energy  electromagnetic (light) and thermal (heat).

Energy Transfer Handout

Energy Transfer Handout

Energy Transfer Energy can move from one place to another. For example, when a golfer swings his club and makes contact with the ball, the mechanical energy is transferred from the club to the ball. A change from one form of energy into another is called energy transformation. During an energy conversion, energy is often lost in the form of heat. This lost heat is often referred to as unwanted energy. DQ: Think about times when heat is produced that is unwanted.

Examples of Energy Transformations Green plants: transform electromagnetic energy  Food  Chemical energy. A car engine: chemical energy in gas  thermal energy  mechanical energy. A candle and a match: chemical energy  electromagnetic (light) and thermal (heat). A fan: electrical energy  mechanical energy. A science hot plate: electrical energy  thermal energy. Batteries in a flashlight: chemical energy  electrical energy  electromagnetic (light) and thermal (heat). DQ: What are some of the forms of energy that you used today? Explain…..

Energy Transformation Practice

Energy Transformation Practice

Energy Transformation Video Clip Discovery Education: Energy Conversions 1:32 USB DQ’s: When you rub your hands together, mechanical energy is transformed into which type of energy? Which type of energy conversions occur when you strike a match? Which type of unwanted energy (lost energy) is usually created during an energy transformation? Discovery Ed: Law of Conservation of Energy 1:00 USB Describe the law of conservation of energy? Give an example of an energy conversion that supports the law of conservation of energy?

Lesson Review Which form of energy does a battery store? When moving air strikes the blades of a windmill, it causes the blades to turn. What form of energy do the blades have? Which of these changes happen when you run? a) Mechanical to chemical b) chemical to mechanical c) Energy is used up and lost d) your body makes new energy Which of the following does not release carbon dioxide when it is used as an energy resource? a) Petroleum (oil) b) ethanol c) coal d) wind Which of the following energy changes happen in an electric lamp? a) electric energy turns into chemical energy b) thermal energy turns into electrical energy c) electric energy turns into electromagnetic energy d) electrical energy turns into mechanical energy
