The Blues

Listening 1 What instruments can you hear? What is this song about? What type of person would sing this style of music?

Listening 2 + 3 What instruments can you hear? What scale does the singer use for their melody? What chord sequence is used in this song? What is this song about?

Performances You will perform the piece of music on the workcards, in pairs this time. 1 person will play the melody 1 person will play the chords You will use a rhythm as your backing track Practice your performance, then perform and be marked.

Lyrics You are going to write your own Blues Lyrics. Each verse is 3 lines long. The 1st and 2nd lines are the same, and the 3rd rhymes with them. Then put your words together with the chords on your workcard – you are then singing the blues!!

Compositions Using the Blues Scale and the 12 Bar Blues chords you will compose a piece of Blues music. You will follow this structure: Introduction (12 bar Blues chords only) Verse (12 Bar Blues Chords plus melody using the notes of the blues scale) Chorus (12 Bar Blues Chords plus a different melody using the notes of the blues scale) Verse Chorus Ending (12 Bar Blues chords only)

Compositions Your compositions must include: Melody (yours); Chords (12 Bar Blues, P2); Accompaniment (rhythm 45, 50’s Rock). 1 person plays the melody 1 person plays the chords Practice your parts Perform and be assessed

Evaluation Questions Was the piece of music successful? What were its strong points? What were its weaker points, and how could it have been improved? Did the piece fulfil the task requirements? Specify? Answer these questions about your group and yourself. Did your group have a leader, or was it run democratically? Did you feel that your were playing a part in your group that matched your ability as a musician? Explain.
