Day 1 Motion vocabulary SCI 10 Physics

Physics The science that deals with matter and energy and their interactions. Examples: motion, light, electricity, gravity, radiation, etc. from atomic particles to the universe...

Kinematics The study of motion in a straight line. Motion: the process of changing position.

Reference point a starting point used to describe the location or position of an object How would you describe: Your location right now? The location of the school?

Scalar vs. Vector Quantities Scalar measure: A quantity that has magnitude (size), but no direction. Ex: Vector measure: has a magnitude AND a direction

Position Position ( ): an object’s location Initial position Includes distance and direction from a reference point Units= meters (m) Vector measure Ex: The crash was 24.5 km south of Exit 3 Initial position Final position direction distance reference point

Distance (d ): di  initial distance df  final distance total length travelled Units: meters (m) Scalar quantity di  initial distance df  final distance ∆d  distance travelled Formula: ∆d = df – di or ∆d = d1 + d2 Ex: From my house, I walked 2 km to the store then returned home. The distance travelled is 2 km + 2 km = 4km

Displacement ( ) Displacement ( ): straight line distance from one point to another The difference between the final position ( ) and the initial position ( ) Unit: meters (m) Vector quantity Displacement is the change in position Δ = change

Time Interval Time (t): units = seconds (s) Scalar quantity Time interval (Δt ): The difference between the final time (end time) tf and the initial (start) time ti. Δt = tf - ti Change in time = final time minus initial time

Practice Determine the following time intervals. From 8:15am to 8:45am From 10s to 55s From 1:30pm to 4:00pm ti = 6.3s and tf = 13.8s ∆t = 30min ∆t = 45s ∆t = 2.5 hours or ∆t = 150min ∆t = 7.5s

Think About It: What is the reference point? What is the person’s initial position? What is the person’s final position? What distance did the person travel? What was the time interval?

Practice What is the total distance covered by race car drivers at the Indianapolis 500 (cars do 200 l aps of a 2.5 mile track)? What is the displacement of a race car driver at the Indy 500? Mrs Purcell is walking in the forest. She doesn’t know it but she is 5m north of a rattlesnake. She walks 4m east, 3m south, 4m west and finally 2m north. Will she walk on the snake?

Practice A skier moves from A to B to C to D. What is the total distance travelled by the skier? What is the skier’s total displacement? A 0 min C 2 min D 3 min B 1 min 40 m 40 m 100 m

2 options for calculating displacement Subtract the change in position using For total ,add all displacements with appropriate – or + symbols

To Do Day 1 Practice Day 2 Scalar and Vector Quantities Practice Day 2 Practice - Determining Distance, Displacement, and Time(
