Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports When working in direct care, human services and in schools you will likely encounter a Positive Behavioral Intervention & Support System, PBIS. What are Positive Behavior Supports? A set of strategies or procedures used to help people improve productive behavior while reducing problematic behavior. These supports are not punishment. They can be individualized.
What could PBIS Involve? Changing an individual’s environment. Altering a person’s surroundings to avoid triggering problematic behavior. Increasing Predictability Creating Schedules & Routines. Talking about how unplanned changes will affect the routine. Preparing for transitions. Reinforcing Positive Behaviors Rewarding behavior Teaching Skills to replace problematic behavior Social skills, stress management strategies, role playing/modeling
Types of Interventions Oregon Intervention System (OIS) The Oregon Intervention System (OIS)- required training for direct support professionals in Oregon. Is adapted from the Professional Assault Response Training to meet Oregon Administrative Rules (OARS). Usually a requirement for Direct Support Professionals in Oregon. Professional Assault Response Training (PART) Focuses on self-control, assessment and verbal crisis intervention. Used only when primary and back up plans do not work and there is an immediate threat of danger.
