New Ideas Challenge Authority in British-America Enlightenment: philosophers like John Locke write about equality, fairness and reason 2. Great Awakening: Evangelical preachers say salvation comes from an individual connecting with God, not the Church 3. Ben Franklin writes about colonial unity, Thomas Paine’s Common Sense questions authority of British Govt.

French and Indian War Early British-American colonists saw themselves as a “city on a hill” – colonists had taken lots of land from Native Americans 1756: France & Britain go to war over land in America Native Americans join French, American colonists fight with British – however, Iroquois tribe later join British British win the war and King George issues Proclamation of 1763 - no settlements west of Appalachians Discuss: Why would an American colonist be upset by the Proclamation?

Stamp Act, 1765 To raise money for F & I War debt, British Parliament requires all printed documents to have revenue stamp (tax) Document Based Questions 1. Who wrote the document and who are they siding with and why? 2. How does the stamp act personally effect them? Do you trust their side of the story, why or why not? 3. (Discuss): Why were people upset over the stamp act? Do you agree or disagree with the protests over the law? Result: British repeal Stamp Act but replace it with Townshend Acts, which tax more things!

Boston Massacre, 1770 Samuel Adams forms “Sons of Liberty” to protest and boycott British goods Due to protests, British send more troops to Boston – violent confrontation erupts VQ1: Who or what escalated the violence? VQ2: How did word of the massacre spread so quickly? DBQ1: Describe what Captain Preston witnessed. DBQ2: Why did British troops fire according to Preston?

Read History Through Art - page 48 (use comp sentences) What did Paul Revere put on the sign above the soldiers and why do you think he did this? How was Captain Preston portrayed vs. how he actually acted? Discuss: What was P. Revere’s point of view and why is that more believable to colonists?

Boston Tea Party, 1773 British East India Co. losing money on tea due to boycott Parliament passes Tea Act: BEIC pays no export tax, goal is to get colonists to buy British tea since it has no tax Colonists (dressed like NAs) dump British tea into Boston Harbor

First Continental Congress, 1774 In response to the Boston Tea Party, King George closes Boston Harbor and Parliament passes Intolerable Acts Colonists send reps to Philadelphia to discuss British actions FCC decides to form militias (Minutemen) to protect themselves Minutemen & British begin fighting at Lexington & Concord VQ: Why is Lexington called “the shot heard round the world”? Were not going to be pushed around!

Second Continental Congress: 1775 After Lexington & Concord, colonists debate two main issues: 1. Should we declare independence from Britain? 2. Should we work things out with King George? Second Cont Cong sends Olive Branch Petition to King George King rejects it, SCC agrees to form an army and declare independence (first fight at Bunker Hill) Let’s give the King another Chance I don’t think so rebel scum!
