Greece Vocabulary

Polis: Greek word for city-state. What word do we get today from POLIS?

Citizen: Legal member of a country or city-state. Who in the US can be a citizen?

Acropolis: “High City”. City on top of a hill. Public buildings located there. Good for defense.

Aristocracy: Greek for “Rule by the best people.” Who would be considered the best?

Democracy: Form of government where citizens hold political power.

Monarchy: Rule by a king or queen.

Oligarchy: Government in which a small group of people rule.
