Room 15 News & Notes September 17 – 21, 2018 Mrs. Nakamura hnakamura@slusd.us https://www.sanleandro.k12.ca.us/Domain/109 (Go to Teacher Pages) Thank you to those who were able to attend Back to School Night. Parents who weren’t able to attend were sent home a copy of my presentation. If you did not receive one, please email me. I forgot to share during my presentation a website for finding the reading level of a book. It is: www.arbookfind.com. You can enter in the title of the book, and it will tell you the reading level (RL). An RL of 3.2 means that it is a 3rd grade book. An RL of 2.5 means it’s a 2nd grade book, and so on. It’s important that the kids read books that are neither too easy, nor too hard for them. All the children know their current reading level. I encourage them to read at, or ABOVE, their reading level, but not too far up. MATH: I will be giving a math quiz this week. On the quiz, I will give the kids a number (like 425) and ask them to write it in expanded form (400+20+5), unit form (4 hundreds, 2 tens, and 5 ones), and word form (four hundred twenty five). I have made a chart in my classroom that spells out all the numbers, and kids can refer to this chart. There will also be word problems asking them to solve by counting by 10’s and 100’s. ELA: Comprehension skill: character, setting, events. We will read “Finding Cal” and “Not Norman”, and use pictures and text to figure out the characters, setting, and events in the story. We will write down these details in a chart to help us organize our thinking. Sight Words: she, by, he, what, want Vocabulary Words (in the stories): decide, different, friendship, glance, proper, relationship, stares, trade VISION AND HEARING SCREENING will be happening for 2nd graders on Mon., Sept. 24th during the school day. Kids who fail the screening will be notified. PICTURE DAY will be on Wed., Oct. 3rd. Say cheese! ROOT BEER FLOAT SOCIAL will be on Wed., Oct. 3rd @ 6pm in the MPR. NO SCHOOL (Teacher Training Day) on Fri., Oct. 5th. SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION DAY will be on Sat., Oct. 6th.
