Lesson Objectives In this lesson you will learn: How to navigate within Epic using buttons and keystrokes

Navigating Epic Actions occur within Epic based on buttons. You tell Epic what you want it to do by clicking buttons. Note: In most cases, you can use a keystroke command instead of your mouse to activate a button. Many find this method quicker and more efficient. These keystroke commands are also known as keyboard shortcuts or access keys .

Access Key Access keys are represented by an underlined letter in the button caption. For example, Alt+the underlined letter to activate a button that offers this shortcut. For example, press Alt+M for Make Appt to activate the Appointment command.

Focus button The active window with a focus button means that you can press the “Enter” key and activate that button. A dashed line (the “focus”) appears around the button to indicate that it is selected. A darker border around a button is also called the focus. The two other methods to activate a button include: clicking on the button with your mouse or using the Access Key method (Alt + underlined letter).

Cancel Button On windows with a Cancel button, you can press the Esc key to activate the Cancel button and close that window. Note: if the “Cancel” button has one of it’s letters underlined, use the “Alt” plus the underlined letter to access the cancel function.

Tab Key Press Tab to move your cursor from field to field and/or from button to button until you reach the button you wish to activate. To reverse directions, hold down the “Shift” key and press Tab.

Magnify Button Brings up the selection list so you can select any of the options displayed. To open, click on it with your mouse, or with the cursor in the field press the F5 key.

Completion Matching Another way to quickly access the selection list options without having to open up the selection list is “completion matching.” Type in the first few letters of the selection item, i.e. ga then press tab to display Gabriel.

Completion Matching If the selection list has corresponding numbers, you can type in the selection numbered item and press “Tab” instead of typing out the word.
