PRESENTATION BY GHANA PORTS & HARBOURS AUTHORITY GPHA Theme: “Contribution of Liaison Officers to the efficient management of PMAWCA” PRESENTATION BY GHANA PORTS & HARBOURS AUTHORITY GPHA

Definition of a Liaison officer Role of a Liaison Officer   Introduction Definition of a Liaison officer Role of a Liaison Officer Challenges faced by the Liaison Officer Recommendations/ conclusion

Introduction: The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority comprises of two (2) main ports: the oldest, Takoradi port (1928) and Tema Port which is the largest built in 1967. The 2 ports are administered by Directors of Port who report to a Director General at the Headquarters.

Cont. For years GPHA has been a member of PMAWCA and we have actively participated and successfully hosted several technical committee and council meetings successfully.

Cont. 2. Definition of Liaison Officer Our role as the Liaison Officers is more of a PR/Marketer in that we nurture relationship between member Ports of PMAWCA and promote the activities of the association within our port.

Cont. 3. The Role of LO’s Facilitation of PMAWCA activities within our ports: Eg, the Secretariat uses LO’s as a communication conduit to disseminate information to various committee/ members and vice versa ;

Cont. When PMAWCA requests for any form of support from our port, we follow up and lobby management to assist. We also plan and execute the sponsored programmes successfully

Cont. As LO’s we also facilitate the release, travelling procedures of delegates and prepare them for any meeting of the Association.

Cont. b) Relationship building: As LO’s we ensure that other members have easier access to management, port facilities and information flow ;

Cont. Eg. In 2017, we have facilitated study visits of UNCATAD Train-For-Trade participants from Lomé and Cotonou ports by drawing comprehensive programs that give them insides into our operations and Ghana as a whole.

Cont. Information exchange: Eg. LO’s are always there to assist any port member who is in need of port data such statistics, projects status etc.

Cont. 4. CHALLENGES Management does not give the LO’s the free will to operate Sometimes we are not in the known of certain decisions taken by our Ports in relation to the association.

Cont. 5.Recommendations The Secretariat should write to our management outlining the role of LO’s in the effective management of the PMAWCA’s activities. This will keep LO’s abreast with all the information on PMAWCA activities so that we will be able to execute our office very well.
