Greasing the Wheels Brought to you by: The Berkeley Biodiesel Collective The Ecology Center Incredible Adventures Members of the Chico Biodiesel Cooperative, the Biodiesel Council of California, and local enthusiasts Invited and requested to provide this kind of information

Welcome to the Show Welcome to Incredible Adventures Facilities The Format for the Evening Questions and Answers Where are bathrooms? Where is literature?

Program Getting Up to Speed Hot Topics in Grassroots Biodiesel Activism San Francisco: Where to Now? (Facilitated Discussion) Or Biodiesel 101, FAQs Each of the topics presented will be getting very short treatment though they could each fill an evening on their own. We understand if the format seems frustrating. It is experimental, and we will try to accommodate your further questions. You have an evaluation form. Be sure to write your questions on that, indicate which presentation you are referring to, and your email address.

Getting Up To Speed led by Girl Mark A quick, brief, all-encompassing presentation on: How the California grassroots biodiesel scene has developed… The story behind the production plants, distribution, and fueling stations that were, are, and might be… The fluctuating legal status of biodiesel… What makes the California picture so unique…

Hot Topics in Grassroots Biodiesel Organizing Bulk Purchasing arrangements Retail Outlets Coop Models Demonstration and Production Sites The Biodiesel Council of California and Regulations Creating Awareness and Education

Bulk Purchasing led by Daniel Sherwood Equipment Coordination of money Different models What the BBC did Smaller models Piedmont Biofuels

Retail Outlets led by SaraHope Smith

Coop Models led by Jon Bauer The Berkeley Biodiesel Collective The Chico Biodiesel Collective The Boulder Biodiesel Collective Piedmont Biofuels

Lessons Learned Start with a project. Let structure flow from needs. Consider your resources: what are the skills your group has; don’t discourage yourselves doing things you don’t have the personnel to do Don’t promise people things (inexpensive fuel, clean busses, etc) Clearly articulate your goals, and then determine what will get you to them. Ask yourself questions: Do we need bylaws? Do we need a website?

Lessons Learned cont. Don’t rely on electronic communication, encourage face-to-face communication. Transparency, Public Access Do you need to do fundraising?

Resources www.berkeleybiodiesel.org www.boulderbiodiesel.com www.piedmontbiofuels.com

Demonstration/Production Sites led by Devin, Jess, David How many people is a good number No more than can be called in an evening Enthusiasm is not the same as commitment It’s not for everyone! Safety of members and the public! How many hours need to be invested? Training: the Cohort model Local Regulations

The Biodiesel Council of California and Regulations led by Carl and Gretchen www.biodieselcouncil.org Launched at the California Biodiesel Consumers Conference, 1/31 and 2/1 2004 Need for a unified voice for biodiesel consumers and businesses in dealing with government and bureaucracies.

The BCC and Regulations How did it start? What are its mission and goals? to inspire socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable development of the biodiesel industry in California educating and organizing the public lobbying for governmental acceptance of neat biodiesel developing and protecting the public biodiesel supply Not meant to replace local efforts

The BCC continued What are its activities? Statewide Clearinghouse Planning Retreats What issues is it dealing with? Department of Measurements and Standards California Air Resources Board ASTM standards for Pure Biodiesel Creating a quality standard for producers (self-regulating industry)

Creating Awareness and Education led by Jason and Claudia

We hope you will stay for the discussion about where to go next, and the opportunity for you to meet each other and talk about what you want to do and how you want to do it. BUT FIRST…

10,000 miles on Vegetable Oil with David and Mali

Where to Now? Led by Jolie and John W. Respecting each other Thoughtful, concise questions and comments Are you a potential bottomliner for a task or project or committee for something going on in your area

Getting Active Context for Getting Active with Biodiesel: This is a nascent, grassroots, DIY initiative that will take serious dedication; you are the pioneers; you are the experts; do this because you want to give and learn.

Getting Active Things to consider:  What are limiting factors of Biodiesel or of a Biodiesel group in San Francisco? Ideas for project to start on… Questions around administration Are you a potential bottomliner for tasks/projects/committees that fall in your areas of interest? When/where/what is the next meeting?
