Eagles visit to the White House cancelled

The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles' White House visit has been canceled due to the controversy over standing for the National Anthem at NFL games, President Donald Trump announced Monday. "The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow," Trump said in a statement. "They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country. The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better."By tradition, the President typically invites the champions of major professional and college sports to the White House for a visit as a part of their victory celebrations. According to some inside sources, the issue Trump brought to the fore -- players kneeling during the National Anthem -- was not one of the team's chief concerns (none of the players on the Eagles team that won the Super Bowl took a knee during the anthem during the regular season…safety Malcolm Jenkins raised his fist during the anthem to protest racial injustice before some games, but he stopped when the NFL pledged to make a $100 million donation to various charities in November).

In Other News Starbucks announced Monday that Howard Schultz will step down later this month as executive chairman, the end of a 36-year run at the company. In an interview with The New York Times, he acknowledged that he may consider a bid for the White House. Schultz, 64, one of the most politically outspoken corporate leaders in America, has been rumored before as a potential Democratic candidate. Former San Francisco 49ers receiver Dwight Clark, who had ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis…aka Lou Gehrig's Disease), died Monday at the age of 61. Clark was a two-time Super Bowl champion and two time pro bowl player, playing in San Francisco from 1979-87 before retiring. Clark's most famous grab (and one of the most famous in NFL history) came in the 1981 NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys in a play forever known as "The Catch."
