Independent and Dependent Variables

A variable is something that is capable of changing. What is a Variable? A variable is something that is capable of changing.

What is an INDEPENDENT VARIABLE? An independent variable is something that is changed to observe the effect it has on the dependent variable. **Causes the change

What is a DEPENDENT VARIABLE? A dependent variable is something that is expected to change because of the independent variable. **Experiences the change

What is a Controlled Variable? Something that does not change and is used as a comparison against the results of the experiment. **NEVER changes

“The ________ variable causes the ________ variable to change.” 1: Independent 2: Dependent

Example 1 The temperature of the water was measured at different depths of the lake. IV: water depth DV: temperature

Example 2 The amount of time you study will make a positive difference on your next test score. IV: study time DV: test score

Example 3 Lemon trees receiving the most water produce the largest lemons. The ___________ causes the ___________ to change. IV: amount of water DV: lemon size
