NARAL By Edward Rowe

Who Are They? National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League. NARAL National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (1969) Pro-Choice America. Has just over a million members. Has access to all branches of government and houses in Congress. Widespread throughout the US.

What issues do they focus on? Abortion. Planned Parenthood. Birth Control, making it more available. Sex Education.

Abortion The Challenge: They feel that women have the right to choose what happens in there body, and so deserve the right to terminate a pregnancy if they want to. To them being pro-choice is about supporting women in making the decisions that are best for them and their families. They stand by the ruling of Roe v. Wade (1973).

Birth Control The Challenge: Many states let pharmacies refuse to fill a birth-control prescription. It's inconvenient for women to be denied their birth-control prescription, and can be dangerous to her health. Women should not fear getting a lecture or being humiliated at the pharmacy counter.

Leadership Nancy Keenan. Under Nancy's leadership, NARAL Pro-Choice America produced enormous pro-choice gains in Congress and helped elect pro- choice President Barack Obama. She also worked with affiliates in four states to defeat seven pro-life ballot measures, including two successive attempts to ban abortion in South Dakota.

Members BELLADONNA, 56 After two live births and one miscarriage, I tried to have a third child. After four sequential miscarriages, I had had enough. When I became pregnant again, I realized that I could not wait for the miscarriage, and arranged a termination. It was awful, and necessary and safe. My husband supported me all the way. I am still sad about all those losses. But I had the right to make the choice for my body, myself. I can only hope that my daughter is afforded that choice.

Successes. Improving Access to Birth Control: Millions of women will have access to prescription birth control without a co-pay, thanks in part to their supporters. Stopping Threats to Choice in the Courts. Electing Pro-Choice Leaders e.g. Obama and Frank Barney.

Failures In the 2010 elections, pro-life politicians took control of the U.S. House and made gains in the U.S. Senate. Senatorial gains may prevent very liberal justices getting confirmed. These may prove troublesome for them in the future. Over half of Americans are still pro-life, which may suggest inefficiency on their part in terms of spreading their message.

Countervailing Groups? National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). Christian Coalition. Other religiously based groups.
