What is Multiplication anyway? We can show it in many different ways… 4 × 6 It’s really as simple as 4 groups of 6! What is Multiplication anyway?

group that is less than one!!!! We can show it in many different ways… 1 × 6 But what if we want a group that is less than one!!!! It’s really as simple as 1 group of 6! How about this one…

I’m SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!!! We can represent a group less than one by a very special kind of number. Can you guess what it is?

A decimal !!!!

Let’s say we only had half a group of six. We can show it in many different ways… 0.5 × 6 Remember, 0.5 has the digit 5 in the tenths place. So the digit 5 has a value of 5 tenths which is equal to one half. But we will talk about that more during fractions. For now, just remember that 0.5 is a group that is less than 1 whole! We could write 0.5 group of 6! Let’s say we only had half a group of six.

Let’s look closer at .5 groups of 3 50 100 + 50 100 + 50 100 150 100 = 0.5 × 3 150 hundredths is the same as 1.5 Talk with your partner, how are 150 hundredths and 1.5 the same number? 0.5 It’s really as simple as 𝟓 𝟏𝟎 groups of 3! 3 Let’s look closer at .5 groups of 3

You can even do two decimals! 0.3 x 0.6 ASSUME THIS WHOLE GRID IS 1 whole! 18 100 0.18 You can even do two decimals!
