Chapter 1 The rules

NUTS rules EU Regulation from 2003 3 hierarchical levels (NUTS levels 1 - 3) Criteria: population thresholds Administrative regions – average size within country Non-administrative regions – size of individual region must comply

Population thresholds Level Minimum Maximum NUTS 1 3 million 7 million NUTS 2 800 000 NUTS 3 150 000

NUTS over time NUTS regions are frozen Possibility to review NUTS regions every 3 years In case of change, statistical data are re-calculated by Member States Length of time series depends on statistical domain (see doc. No. 12)

Chapter 2 The proposal

Proposals from Member States Deadline 30 June 2006 12 countries sent proposals via their Permanent Representative to Commission in Brussels Most proposals from MS accepted by Eurostat In addition: include an old proposal for NUTS 1 in SE

Commission proposal Annexes I (list of regions) and annex II (administrative status) to NUTS Regulation will be replaced Annex III (smaller adm units) will not be changed New NUTS codes are created by Eurostat Countries concerned (annex I): BE, CZ, DK, DE, ES, IT, NL, PL, SI, FI, SE, UK

The proposal in detail Territorial changes (112 new regions) Name changes (10 regions) Name corrections (12 regions) Biggest change is in Denmark NUTS 1 changed only in SE NUTS 2 changed only in DK, DE, SI, UK All other territorial changes are at NUTS level 3
