SPC Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries Fish for Life TUVALU FISHERIES Top Issues in Coastal Fisheries Data Collections SPC Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries

Issues Not using eMonitoring yet – though we want to ! Existing databases RFID, SEMCOS, Tufman(2), even Tails not suitable to our needs Need Creel, Ciguatera (GTX and CTX), fish export and vessel monitoring Need Tails+ using tablets and cloud to improve efficiency so we can do other things Using old paper forms and database – inefficient, slow, double-data handling

Priorities Need to move quickly through data collection to management Need easy ways to assess and re-assess multiple species cheaply and quickly Already using PacFishID on tablets

What we are collecting Creel to underpin management – using the instant size method CTX: Cases of ciguatera poisoning using SPC form GTX: Counts of G. toxicus and other spp in the lagoon SE surveys done 2015-2016, but no plans to keep going Vessels: Boats & canoes LMMA data Exports of reef fish Water quality delayed till 2018

Our Capacity We are doing all except water quality monitoring now Have 11 staff at HQ, + 7 on Outer Is. Funds from GoT, World Bank, NZ, NAPA II, R2R New vessel Tala Moana for regular metronome trips to Outer Islands SPC server and internet connection not working Using new server and our own database – but poor performance: paper to database, slow, unstable, multiple handling of data Tala Moana

Need: Tails+ Tablets + Cloud Use anywhere in Tuvalu and sync with database Incorporate Creel (with length/weight), GTX,CTX, vessels, exports etc. Single entry data, quick Prepared queries for quick analysis Funding is available from Tuvalu to assist with this Need SPC’s help
