histograms

histogram A histogram is a type of bar graph used to display numerical data that have been organized into equal intervals. Histograms allow you to see how many pieces of data are in each interval. *** They are different from bar graphs in that they represent an interval and not just a number. Also, in a histogram the bars tough because the numbers represented are continuous.

Scales and intervals Deciding on the scale and intervals is the most difficult part of constructing a histogram. The scale must include all numbers in the data set. The interval should organize the data to make it easy to compare. Intervals on a histogram must represent the same range of numbers. For example, one interval cannot be 0-5 and the next 6-10. Why?

Constructing a histogram The table shows the number of daily visitors to selected state parks. Draw a histogram to represent the data. Daily Visitors to Selected State Parks Visitors Tally Frequency Make a frequency table to organize the data. Decide on your scale beforehand. Draw and label a horizontal and vertical axis. The horizontal axis will show the intervals and the vertical axis will show the frequencies. Include a title. For each interval, draw a bar to the height representing the frequency. Remember, the bars must touch on a histogram.
