Investigator Eyes See the Big Picture LAFS.K.RL.3.7: With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).

Focus: Book Cover Clues Introduction Slides Focus: Book Cover Clues “I Do” Think Aloud

Use this slide to discuss details and make web with details first, main idea second. Think aloud approach may sound like this: “ I notice a giraffe on the cover. I notice stars and the moon. I see a monkey watching the giraffe. The giraffe is jumping and spinning. I think the giraffe is dancing at night.” As you say each thing you notice, add it to the detail circles on the graphic organizer. Touch each thing you notice to clearly show that the picture is telling you the clues.

The cow jumped over the moon. Ask students to show thumbs up if the text matches the illustration, thumbs down if it does not. The cow jumped over the moon.

The giraffe is dancing at night.
