Craft Knife Safety DEFINITION: An Craft Knife (X-Acto knife) is a precision cutting tool used for materials such as cardboard, balsawood and paper. The key to using an X-Acto knife is to take your time and concentrate while keeping your hands at a safe distance.

RULES FOR USE

RULES FOR USE: 1. When you get your knife for the day, make sure all your pieces are there and the blade is complete, sharp and tightly in the knife collar. If something is missing, tell Mr. Adelmund IMMEDIATELY.

RULES FOR USE: 2. Mark your lines to be cut with a pencil before using the X-Acto knife. 3. Always place a cutting mat under what is being cut and ONLY cut on a firm surface.

RULES FOR USE: 4. Occasionally check to make sure the blade remains tight in the collar of the knife handle. 5. Securely grip the handle of the knife so that it does not slip out of your hands.

RULES FOR USE: 6. Firmly hold the material you are cutting. 7. Keep your fingers as far away from the blade as possible and ALWAYS CUT AWAY FROM YOURSELF!!

RULES FOR USE: 8. Concentrate directly on what you are doing while handling the X-Acto knife. 9. Avoid using excessive force or pressure to keep from making cuts that are too deep.

RULES FOR USE: 10. Make several passes while cutting - score the line several times until it cuts through. 11. One person per knife and cutting mat.

RULES FOR USE: 12. Do not bother or interrupt someone using an X-Acto knife. 13. Do not hand a knife to someone, instead, put it on the table and let them pick it up.

RULES FOR USE: An X-Acto knife is NOT a toy. If you’re seen “playing” with the knife it will be taken away from you and you will be unable to complete your project.
