Take out a sheet of paper Take out a sheet of paper. You are taking notes today that will be turned in for a grade at the end of the period.

Short Answer Responses 32% of your Reading grade You will answer 3 You will have 10 lines to answer

Grade Analysis Textual Support 3 2 1 clear deep understanding-thoughtful unique understanding-insightful sophisticated Organized smoothly integrated quotes (embedded, modified, or ellipses); paraphrases with citations; specific synopses strongly linked clear, accurate and relevant 2 clear and specific makes sense – literal or makes sense – conceptual 1 reasonable somewhat unclear or vague missing idea statement general incomplete partially accurate/relevant no textual evidence at all weakly connected to idea accurate/relevant too general or vague not reasonable not based on text (not in story) plot summary question not addressed Incorrect incomplete or irrelevant irrelevant no textual evidence

R.A.P.P. Restate the question Analyze Prove it- GIVE TEXTUAL EVIDENCE Proof read- Does it make sense?

General Tips Do not start with the words: Because Yes No Do not end with the words from a quote, end with your own words. You are proving that you understand what you read, so don’t give an opinion, unless you give examples from the reading itself.

General Tips Find 3-5 pieces of evidence that answers the question before you begin answering. Pick the evidence (1-2) that works best or is the strongest (most relevant). Think through your answer before you start writing. Write a rough draft. You will have time. (It’s only 10 lines. Don’t be lazy.)

Practicing Together What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? On your own, find 3 pieces of evidence. Write it on your notes.

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? “Be better off drawing pictures that will make money.” “Tell me about my mom.” Rude response. “we weren’t close.” “He loved showing off how handy he was and proving that anything I did was wrong.” Vladek yelled and blamed Art for no reason “He had aged a lot since I saw him last.”

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? Art and Vladek’s relationship is judgmental. The reader becomes aware of this when Art describes his father as, loving “…showing off how handy he was and proving that anything I did was wrong.” He also feels judged in his career choice because his father tells him, you would “Be better off drawing pictures that will make money.” Clearly, Art and Vladek’s relationship is characterized by judging one another.

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? Vladek blames Art for spilling his pills Art lies to Vladek Vladek wants to give his son the best Vladek says he must finish his dinner “I give up” when helping his father Vladek throws out Art’s coat “You always pick up trash! Can’t you buy wire?”

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? Vladek and Art’s have a judgmental relationship. Vladek doesn’t think that Art’s coat is good enough and throws it out without talking to Art about it. Art also judges his father for picking up random things on the street to use. He complains, “You always pick up trash! Can’t you buy wire?” Clearly, both Art and Vladek judge one another.

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? “I want to hear it. Start with Mom” “We weren’t that close” Blaming Art for knocking over pills “Come, we’ll talk while I peddle. Vladek throws out Art’s coat

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? The relationship between Vladek and Art is dysfunctional. When Vladek knocks over his pills, he immediately blames Art for the mistake. Art doesn’t enjoy being blamed for other’s mistakes which explains why he says, “We weren’t that close.” The reader discovers many more reasons for their dysfunction, including Art’s mother’s suicide and long periods without seeing each other.

What kind of relationship do Art and Vladek have in Maus? Vladek and his son Art have a distant relationship filled with tension. When Art first goes to visit his father, he mentions that they, “…weren’t that close.” (p.13) The reader continues to sense the tension and distance by Art smoking in front of his father with heart problems. This displays a direct lack of concern for his father’s health.
