8th Grade LA History Unit 1 Topic 2 Coastal Erosion 8th Grade LA History Unit 1 Topic 2

Unit 1 Topic 2 Purpose I can explain how coastal erosion impacts our economy by analyzing the causes; solutions; and cultural, economic, and geographic effects of coastal erosion.

LA’s Governor Declares State of Emergency Use Resources LA’s Governor Declares State of Emergency http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo- way/2017/04/20/524896256/louisianas- governor-declares-state-of-emergency- over-disappearing-coastline Written Document Analysis Worksheet

Central Idea Groups: Determine the central idea. Provide specific evidence from text to support the author’s central idea. Post 1 response per group onto Google Classroom.

Collaboration Review What is coastal erosion? What threat does coastal erosion pose to LA’s coastline? What are the various causes of coastal erosion? What are some solutions to coastal erosion?

Resources: Video on Coastal Erosion 3. LA Coastal Land Loss Simulation 1932-2050 Land Loss What could eventually happen if people do not stop or slow down coastal erosion?

Collaboration on Google Classroom 1 post per group How has coastal erosion already affected LA? How will coastal erosion continue to affect LA? How much land has LA lost since 1932? What part of LA is most in danger of land loss?

Review before Research How did the MR create land in south LA?

Use Resources 4. Video: Need to Know--LA’s Disappearing Delta 5. Complete Analysis handout

Collaboration on Google Classroom Each group post 1 analysis handout response.(resource 5) Whole Group discussion.

Collaboration on Google Classroom How did river sediment create land in LA? How do humans block sediment from the marshlands? What are the effects of blocking sediment from getting into the marshes? WHy did French colonists create levees? How do levees help LA citizens and cities? How do levees hurt LA’s coastline?

Use Resources to Collaborate on GCL Analyze the many manmade and natural causes of coastal erosion in detail. 6. La’s coastal wetlands 7. What we’ve done to MR 8. La’s disappearing wetlands

Use Resources: Split-Page Notes--Post GCL How do manmade structures shape the MR path? How do levees contribute to coastal erosion? How does the loss of barrier islands lead to further land loss? How does saltwater intrusion lead to land loss? How do hurricanes cause land loss? How can sea level rise lead to further land loss?

Connecting to prior learning Last lesson: How MR impacts LA’s geography. Now: What conclusions can you draw about the effects of economic impact of coastal erosion?

Use Resources to Collaborate on GCL Economic Impact of Coastal Erosion 10. Impact Hand out 11. LA Coastal wetland function value 12. La’s sinking Coast 13. Coastal erosion poses risk to BR

Economic Impact of Coastal Erosion Test Review on GCL Explain how seafood industry will be negatively affected by CE. How will oil companies lose money because of CE? How will storm surges increasingly damage cities? Explain effects of CE on LA’s economy. Why should LA and federal government fight to stop and eventually reverse CE?

Economic Impact of Coastal Erosion What are solutions to coast erosion? Explain the costs of coastal restoration projects. Where is the LA government going to acquire the money needed for coastal restoration? Explain how coastal restoration projects will help LA’s economy. Explain how the negative effects to LA’s economy if coast restoration projects are not started and completed.

Constructed Response Rubric Use the questions to logically order your response. Restate and answer each question. Support each question with evidence from sources. Evidence and notes are available on GCL Use the rubric (resource #16) to guide you through your response.
