Detached scholarship Academics work with ideas Dichotomy: world of ideas & reality or practice Objectivity (understood as neutrality) is prized above all The academic is not concerned with application – that is the business of others

Science for society Science and knowledge is owned by the university It is offered to and consumed by society The university is a knowledge service provider There is an awareness of “real world” problems and the role that knowledge can play in addressing these problems Making available university expert knowledge to solve “real world” problems

Engaged scholarship Knowledge ecology: university is one part of this ecology Relationship between scholarship and human development Takes seriously issues of cognitive justice, co-production of knowledge, transdisciplinarity, complexity, the potential of engagement for the university and its sustainability Deep realisation that interactions with other social partners can critically impact on the university itself: Engaged scholarship is a different model of scholarship from the expert model. Serious engagement can produce “relational, localised and contextual knowledge” in a process of “co-production of knowledge”, i.e. knowledge with global applicability can be generated in a local setting: we can be knowledge leaders resulting from our engagement with local communities and issues

Engaged scholarship Combines an understanding of scholarship AND an understanding of community engagement techniques Based on academic expertise Linked to Teaching and Learning, and Research Involves community as ‘knowers’ not as subjects only Benefits community (in their terms) Benefits teaching and learning for students and the agenda of the scholar, discipline and university
