Presentation transcript:

Space – The Final Frontier History The children will be creating a time line for the history of space travel. They will be carrying out research on the first moon landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. They will also look at the first aeroplane flight as well as the first female pilot to fly solo, Amy Johnson. R.E This term the class will be exploring the idea that created things have creators. Having considered God as the creator of the world, children will go on to thinking about how thanks is given. We will be linking thanks with our harvest festival celebrations. Maths The focus this term is on number. The Year 2 children will be looking at sequencing and the value of a digit. The Year 3 children will be using their partitioning skills to solve complex 3 digit problems mentally. The whole class will go on to look at time, which will link in to activities related to our class English book. We will end the term reading and presenting data. Space – The Final Frontier Literacy Bob Man on the Moon Simon Bartram’s book offers a fantastic creative route when accessing the English curriculum. The children will be giving their opinions, writing letters and creating character profiles. They will also use role-play to explore meaning and write in role as their chosen character. The Year 3 children will be using debate, persuasive writing as well as producing newspaper reports about their visit to the moon. Art & DT The children will be using ink to create marble paintings. They will also be using their knowledge on colour mixing when creating scenes from the book ‘Bob Man on the Moon’. Using paper mache the class will be creating a planet from our solar system. The children will also be using their design skills to design and create packaging for space food. Science - Light The children will be looking at the sun and moon. They will identify light sources and address misconceptions about the moon. This will lead on to working with mirrors to discovering more about reflection. We will discuss the dangers of sun light and think about danger prevention methods. We will investigate opaque materials and how the distance from light source changes shadows. P.E Children in Sapling class will have the opportunity of taking part in two PE sessions each week. Mrs Thorogood will be taking a Multiskills lesson on a Monday for children in KS1 while KS2 children will focus on hockey skills. On a Friday the children will focus on Football skills and playing as part of a team. We are delighted that Vinny, a sports specialist, will be our football coach for some of these sessions. Geography The children will be looking at maps of Rodmarton and learning to identify particular areas using a grid reference. We will look at aerial photographs and this will lead onto making a map of the moon. Visits/Trips Explorer Space Dome The National Space Centre Music Year 2 & 3 will have weekly ukulele lessons. The whole class will be listening to and responding to Gustav Holst’s orchestral piece ‘The Planets’
