Why create a QIPL distinction pathway? Limited structured time for longitudinal training in QI Scattered QI opportunities may be challenging to independently navigate Lack of structured mentorship may increase the risk of frustration and disengagement with QI

Mission Statement This distinction pathway aims to provide focused, hands-on training and a real-world experience in understanding the science behind systems of health care delivery through: skill building sessions longitudinal committee work participation in a mentored QI project Trainees will experience a customized opportunity to acquire the skills, confidence, and knowledge necessary to begin a journey toward national prominence in QI and Physician Leadership

Components Education Engagement in QI initiatives Leadership skill building

Education Requirement: Attend at least 3 quarterly sessions of a QI and leadership development series and complete the IHI module Goal: Acquire knowledge and build skills through small group learning and self study Other educational offerings: Literature on Med Hub Opportunities to attend QI education opportunities QI night

Engagement in QI Initiatives-Hospital Committee Membership Requirement: Formally join a standing hospital committee with endorsement of the committee chair. Goals: Gain exposure to committee work and inter-professional relationships in a real-world setting Provide an opportunity to develop skills related to managing clinical work and administrative tasks Broaden leadership style exposure via interacting with leaders at YNHH and WH VA

Engagement in QI Initiatives- Hospital Committee Membership cont. Expectations: Attend committee meetings and learn to balance clinical and administrative responsibilities Follow minutes and workflow of committee Participate fully in tasks assigned from the committee

Engagement in QI Initiatives- Participation in a Mentored QI Project Requirement: Select and work on a longitudinal project Goals: Learn project selection, development, execution, and leadership skills Learn effective and efficient oral presentation and communication skills Experience the realities of a QI project, including but not limited to the frequent failures associated with real-world QI projects

Engagement in QI Initiatives- Participation in a Mentored QI Project- cont. Expectations: Identify a longitudinal faculty mentor for a project Design and execute a small project through to completion, investing ~80-100 hours distributed over PGY 2 and PGY 3 years Create an oral presentation or abstract

Engagement in QI Initiatives- Presentation of the Mentored QI Project Expectations: Create an oral presentation or abstract Present at a local, regional or national meeting

Leadership Skill Building Participation on committee work Networking with physician leaders

What will you gain? Didactics: Acquire strong skills helpful for your committee and project work Build your repertoire in your pursuit for a leadership position in QI or systems redesign in health care Committee work: Learn to be an active and meaningful participant in a health care committee Understand how to lead a successful, collaborative, and productive committee Mentored QI project: First-hand experience and skill development in selecting and progressing through a QI project
