Question for Reconstruction Physical Destruction Sherman’s March Home front warfare Cultural Destruction Political reentry End of the institution of slavery. Economic problems.

Beginnings of Reconstruction Lincoln’s 10% Plan 10% of voters take oath, statehood would be reestablished. Freedman’s Bureau Establish schools, and churches. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee complied, but Lincoln’s plan not acceptable to Congress. Lincoln was very easy on the South and many hated him because of it.

Radical Republican Reaction Congress passes the Wade-Davis Bill Majority must take Loyalty Oath Must formally abolish slavery Conf. Official not allowed to participate in new government. Lincoln didn’t approve and exercised his pocket Veto.

Johnson’s Plan Supported 13th Amendment but viewed black suffrage as an issue of the states. Pardons granted to those taking loyalty oaths. No pardons available to Conf. officials and persons owning over $20,000 worth of property. Very Lenient much like Lincoln’s.

Radical Reaction Refused to seat new southern reps that came from the south. South should be punished. Extended Freedmen’s Bureau.

Andrew Johnson Impeached Impeached for opposing congresses views, but not convicted. Replaced in the next election by U.S. Grant. 15th amendment soon after passed saying that voting could no longer be denied based on race or color. Republican party known for civil rights.

What is the message of the cartoon? Who would of opposed this message?

African Americans in Reconst. Never got their 40 acres and a mule. Plantation owners kept most of their land and therefore their wealth and power. Sharecropping: Kept poor whites and blacks down. - Landowners divided land among families and gave them tools and seeds, the sharecropper only got to keep a small portion of the crop.

Collapse of Reconstruction Vigilante groups: KKK Wanted to destroy the republican party. Killed as many as 20,000 women, children and men. 1872: Congress allows Fredmens’s Bureau to expire. Amnesty Act: Gave 150,000 former confederates the right to hold federal and state offices.
