Andrew Johnson Impeached Impeached for opposing congresses views, but not convicted. Replaced in the next election by U.S. Grant. 15th amendment soon after passed saying that voting could no longer be denied based on race or color. Republican party known for civil rights.

African Americans in Reconst. Never got their 40 acres and a mule. Plantation owners kept most of their land and therefore their wealth and power. Sharecropping: Kept poor whites and blacks down. - Landowners divided land among families and gave them tools and seeds, the sharecropper only got to keep a small portion of the crop.
