Co-ordinates in all four quadrants CARTESIAN CO-ORDINATES Why do we need co-ordinates? Co-ordinates are used in mathematics to describe the position of a point. The common system of co-ordinates uses are cartesian co-ordinates which are normally referred to as rectangular co-ordinates. They are called Cartesian because the idea was developed by the French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes who was also known as Cartesius. “His best known philosophical statement is "I think, therefore I am"  (French: Je pense, donc je suis; Latin: Ego cogito, ergo sum), found in Discourse on the Method (1637; written in French and Latin)” Wikipedia 2018 To be able to identify co-ordinates and plot points in all four quadrants. To be able to find the co-ordinates of points using geometrical information in 2D. To be able to draw, label, scale axes and find the co-ordinates of the mid-point.

Co-ordinates in all four quadrants CARTESIAN CO-ORDINATES Cartesian co-ordinates can be use to position or locate points in 2 dimensions or 3 dimensions as illustrated below. To be able to identify co-ordinates and plot points in all four quadrants. To be able to find the co-ordinates of points using geometrical information in 2D. To be able to draw, label, scale axes and find the co-ordinates of the mid-point.

Identifying co-ordinates 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 x -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 A C B D E F G H I Write down the co-ordinates of the points shown in the diagram. NB: The right order of co-ordinates are: (x, y) along the corridor and up/down the stairs. or x (horizontal axis) is before y (vertical axis) in the alphabet. Click icon below for answers

Plotting points Plot and label the following points on your graphs. A 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 x -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 Plot and label the following points on your graphs. A (-7,-4) B (-4,1) C (-2,4) D (0,1) E (3,-4) F (-2,1) Join the points and write what letter you have made. Click icon below for answers

Co-ordinates in all four quadrants To be able to identify co-ordinates and plot points in all four quadrants. To be able to find the co-ordinates of points using geometrical information in 2D. To be able to draw, label, scale axes and find the co-ordinates of the mid-point. Write code then explain WHY? For example: G – I can find the co-ordinates of points using geometrical information and explain how to label and scale axes.
