Research Methods Qualitative Paradigm April 13, 2018 Dr. Paula Charbonneau-Gowdy

One way to view the world ..

And a qualitative(ly) different view…

In terms of language learning it means ... Seeking an in-depth understanding of a phenomenon Locating the teacher/researcher in the research context (emic position)

Connecting participants to contexts, both past and present, political and ideological… Making the research context more visible for others…

Using various tools to represent….. Case studies Personal experience Introspection Interviews Artifacts Cultural texts Observational, historical interactional and visual texts

Tools that are used to describe routine and problematic moments and meanings in natural settings in the individuals’ LL lives…

Believing that Reality can never be fully aprehended only approximated That these tools will help to capture a closer view of participants’ perspectives That we need to see the LL world in action not at some specific moment in time And that these tools will provide a rich description of the social world

In order to change that world…..

Qualitative EFL researchers now struggle to connect their research to the hopes and needs, goals and promises of a free 21st century democratice society….

It is by casting a light on the constructed nature of what is held as normative that one can find the interices [the openings] that enable critical inquiry. (Norton, 2015)
