What is this a picture of? See if students know if this is Turtle Island and is a type of map. See the Turtle Island Information card to give students further information. The Grade 3 Dakota Lesson has further information if students knowledge is lacking.

What is this a picture of? Do students know that this is a world map? Talk about borderlines and how they are created? What is this a picture of?

Have students answer the questions on the slide. Do you have relationships with people close to where you currently live? Far away? How do you stay in contact with these people today? How would you people have stayed in contact with people 100 years ago?

If you lived in the Stonebridge area 10 years ago, where would you have gone to shop? 10 years ago there wasn’t grocery stores or big box stores Why do people shop?

What is available to people in the Stonebridge area now? Talk about grocery stores and other places that supply the needs of the community. Ask what they still need to leave the community for?
