Gender Aims To further our knowledge of gender and the different types of both men and women

Recap What is meant by nature and nurture? Why is TV influential in the creation of stereotypes? What could be some of the traditional stereotypical qualities of men / women? What could be media products that are stereotyped towards both men and women?

Starter - TV Characterisation and gender. Task 2: What can we specifically say about the gender representation of these characters on page? Task 1 : Think again of TV drama characters. List some that you believe are a stereotype of a particular gender trait. Eg: the passive weak female or the aggressive, rational male.

The female of the species. Are women still like the traditional stereotypes? Read the article from the 1950s magazine – The Good Wife and watch the clip from Mad Men Read page 174 in the handbook. The feminist and post- feminist movements. Read page 175.

In pairs list who do you consider as contemporary post-feminist icons and why? Madonna- Wife, mother, singer, actress, writer and business woman Sharon Osbourne- Mother, wife, manger, business woman

Post Feminism in Popular Culture Popular culture very much reflected this changing view of women in society. In music Madonna and into the 1990s the Spice Girls became popular preaching ideas of girl power. Films like Bend it like Beckham began to show women taking control of their own lives. Action films like Tomb Raider showed that women could handle tough situations as well as men. In TV programmes like Buffy featured strong women heroines who could fight as well as men. One of the most popular sitcoms of the 1990s Absolutely Fabulous showed this idea of women being responsible for their own destiny and being able to do many of the traditional things that men did, not needing men to give meaning to their lives!

Analysis of Women in TV Drama Main task: Watch the scene from Mistresses and analyse the gender representation of the women. What behaviour / representations could be said to be stereotypical in the style of the 1950s housewife and what behaviour / representations fit in with a post feminist viewpoint? We will watch the clip twice.

The changing face of man Are men still the same as the traditional stereotypes? Mens place in society and their roles changed following post feminism Read page 177 and 178 in handbook. The new man and metrosexual

Analysis of Men in TV Drama Main task: Watch the clip from Hollyoakes and analyse the gender representation of the men. What behaviour could be said to represent a traditional stereotypical role? What behaviour / which men could be said to be new man or metrosexual representations?
