Ch 10 Change Controller to Facilitator Employee empowerment and participation TQM Impact of Technology Resistance and strategies

Change This is the way in which Irish managers have had to change the way they deal with their employees. They have switched from controlling managers to facilitator managers.

From Controller to F No opinions needed from employees A coach who gives them the skills to do it for themselves. Helps with mistakes offers help, T and D. Controller threatened and punished and kept a close eye Facilitators offers more responsibility and part ownership of the work that needs to be achieved.

Employee Empowerment Employees power to make decisions without permission. E.G fast food employees think for themselves on how to solve the problem for the customer. Helps morale Uses employees skills Managers have more time now to get on with bigger tasks Employee participation or industrial democracy: Involving employees more in decision making and running of business. Work Councils Fellow employees elected and have a say in stategy Worker Directors: Same but sit with the BOD Share Options: Get shares at a reduced price so part owners now. Better communication/industrial realtions and great intraprenurship.

TQM Strategy to ensure 100% perfection and customer satisfaction. Principles are; Focus on the customer Empowerment Teamwork Continuous improvement Benefits; Quality and so sales up Motivation and commitment up Less faulty goods so costs down E.G Guinness See book and our case study

Impact of technology for Employers Marketing(e.g online advertising) and selling 24/7 online Decision making better as more info. E.g can review price lists of suppliers and competitors. Production; CAD, CAM, Robotics. 24 hr machines less costly mistakes. Redundancies. E.g Ryanair replaced check in staff with check in machines and online bookings to reduce costs. Motivates employees and can work from home hence keeping staff. Increases initial set up costs but lower as less faulty products and less staff needed.
