Curiosity Starters Rachel Davis

1) Create a case against me Give students a false or controversial statement They have to make a case against you Gives them exploration time They create their own ‘questions’ Gets them thinking and hooks them in

2) Gradual reveal I’ve seen this done with pictures a lot so I thought I would try it with text Show them part of the text…what do you think we are doing today? Then reveal a bit more and see if their view has changed Each reveal narrows the possibilities until they finally guess They loved it – competition to be the one to guess it right They made some amazing links to things it could have possibly been and were able to justify why

3) Drawing on their experience (and yours!) Telling them a bit about ‘you’ Getting them to draw on their experience They got really in to this and had great discussions A fab ‘hook’ in to the topic

4) ‘Initial response’ grid Got students thinking and asking questions before giving them information Doing it individually, then QR codes, then pair discussion then back to individual provided both challenge and support at appropriate times
