QW #10 - China Review with your partner and reflect on what you know about China from last semester. What are some things that stand out about China? Describe their status in the world. What were their strengths/weaknesses? Elaborate. 1 paragraph

Civil War in China

Objective: Students will explore and summarize the post WW1 effects of China and India through their Cornell notes, QWs, and exit slip.

Setting the Stage China had faced years of humiliation at the hands of outsiders Many Chinese believed that modernization and nationalism was key for survival Wanted to modernize Build army/navy Others feared change and believe in the traditional ways

Kuomintang vs. Qing Dynasty Kuomintang or Nationalist Party Group led by Sun Yixian that favored democratic ideas Sun spent many years in the U.S. and wanted to change China Qing dynasty Ruled China since 1644 Believed in the traditional ways and wanted to keep China secluded

Nationalist Party takes over 1912 Sun becomes president of the new Republic of China Hoped to establish a modern government 1. Nationalism – wanted to end foreign control 2. People’s rights – democracy 3. People’s livelihood – economic security for all Chinese

Sun Yixian Fails Had no real power to control the people of China Lacked military power No authority Warlord armies controlled China Ruled territories as large as their armies could conquer

Jiang Jieshi 1925 1928 Jiang took over Sun Yixian’s Kuomintang group The U.S. and Great Britain recognized Jiang as the President of the Nationalist Republic of China Promised democracy and political rights to all Chinese Government became less democratic and more corrupt

Chinese Communist Party on the Rise Leader = Mao Zedong Promised to support peasants and small farmers Gave land to peasants to gain their support People began to dislike Jiang as he did nothing to improve the lives of the people

Civil War in China Nationalist party vs. Communist party The Long March War between Jiang and Mao Advantage goes to Jiang (support from U.S. and Britain) Civil War gets put off due to Japanese Invasion Pg. 450 - 452 Think about… What is the Long March? What happened? Who won?

Japan invades China Mao and Jiang are forced to ally to fight off the Japanese Civil War will have to wait…

QW #10 (Communism in China) What made the Communist Party appealing in comparison to the Nationalist Party? How did Mao convince so many peasants to join him? Explain. Pg. 402-403 Read “Nationalists and Communists Clash” and “Peasants align themselves with the Communists”
