Water & Carbon Cycle Changes Over Time Water use and the impact on the water cycle

Water Use These three images show three sources of fresh water. Which two do we rely on in southern England and why?

Water Use Water extraction Read the information on water extraction from the River Kennet on page 122 and the news articles. Describe the characteristics of the Kennet Explain why the river is important How has over extraction affected the river? How are they trying to solve this problem?

What will happen when it rains?

Water Use Aquifers and artesian basins Why does the ground water table in southern England vary throughout the year? Why does water flow out from an artesian well? Draw an annotated diagram of London’s aquifer to explain how it operates. Explain why the water table in London has changed so dramatically during the 20th century. Explain the impacts of a changing water table under a city.

Water Use Final thought What impact will water extraction from rivers and aquifers have on the local water cycle?
