Sectionalism Why can’t we be friends?

What is SECTIONALISM? The idea that America was dividing into three sections because of their differences Three sections: North, South, West These differences were: Economic Political Social

Economic Differences North: Industrial Large Cities More railroads and other forms of transportation Less slavery than the South South: Agrarian Towns and small cities Economy based on agriculture and slavery (cash crops)

Factory System vs. Plantation Slavery Both are focused on making $$$ Both have a central supervisor Plantation: Overseer Factory: Floor Boss Both treat their workers poorly Both have workers complete one task many times

The Missouri Compromise Missouri, a new state in the Louisiana Territory, wanted to be part of the United States If Missouri became a slave state, there would have been more slave states than free states If that happened, slave states would have more representatives than free states (and more power) Solution: Missouri = slave state Maine = free state No more slavery above the 36’30 line

Big Questions Moving Forward When we add a new state to the United States, will it be free or slave?
