REGULATORY OVERSIGHT OF RADIOACTIVE WASTE REPOSITORIES IN HUNGARY Zsuzsanna Hauszmann Hungary, Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority The regulatory oversight of the radioactive waste repositories was changed in 2014, in Hungary. After the amendment of the Act CXVI of 1996 on atomic energy (2013), the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) took over the task of regulatory oversight of these facilities. In Hungary, two radioactive waste disposal facilities are in operation. The Radioactive Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility (RWTDF) for the institutional low and intermediate radioactive waste, where the waste processing, interim storage and the final disposal are also carried out. The short-lived low and intermediate radioactive wastes from the Paks NPP are disposed in the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR). The new Governmental Decree 155/2014. (VI.30.) Korm. on the safety requirements of interim storage and final disposal facilities of radioactive waste and the related regulatory activities was put into force on 30th of June 2014. After taking over the regulatory oversight, the HAEA has started the development of guidelines, licensing and inspection activities.
