Literal Equations and Formulas You can solve both literal equations and formulas. You will use inverse operations to solve for the given variable.
What is a literal equation? An equation with letters replacing coefficients and constants.
How do you solve a literal equation? You will use inverse operations to isolate the given variable. You treat it just like you are solving a regular linear equation.
What about an equation with two or more variables? When an equation has two or more variables, it can be rewritten so that one variable is a function of the other variable(s).

The penny size d of a nail is given by d = 4n – 2 where n is the length (in inches) of the nail. Solve the formula for n. Use the formula to find the lengths of nails with penny sizes: 5, 12, 16, and 20.
