Agenda Anne Hathaway’s speech before the UN Benchmark 3 practice DO: Demonstrate proficiency in identifying and analyzing rhetorical devices and analyzing the purpose. HW: Grammar quiz tomorrow

Benchmark 3 Wednesday & Thursday (2 days) Read a speech Analyze speaker’s purpose using 3 rhetorical devices (3 pieces of evidence total) Basically the SAT essay

Anne Hathaway’s UN address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZ7GBZrG8k Anne Hathaway’s UN address As you listen, annotate for devices, especially anecdote, allusion, antithesis, anaphora, rhetorical questions, and pronouns.

Determine purpose What is she doing? Is she just describing a problem (informing) or does she want people to do something about it (persuade or convince)?

Advocating (persuading) for paid parental leave Identify rhetorical devices used, especially Anecdote Anaphora Antithesis Rhetorical question

Why does she use an anecdote about her dad? How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? What does it emphasize?

Anecdote How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? This establishes that fathers are important in one’s life, and the lessons they can teach. Hathaway is only able to have this experience with her dad because her family can afford it; if more fathers can afford to take time off to spend with their kids, then they can not only have better lives, but their kids will be as well. Paid parental leave is the solution to ensure that others can have this positive experience too

Why does she use an anecdote about her son? How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? What does it emphasize?

Anecdote How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? This establishes that sometimes maternity leave isn’t enough; fathers (or other spouses) need to be able to care for their children, especially immediately after birth, when mothers are often physically recovering. Paid parental leave is the solution to ensure that others can have the time they need to take care of themselves and their families.

Agenda Grammar quiz – colons and semicolons Anne Hathaway’s speech before the UN Benchmark 3 practice DO: Demonstrate proficiency in identifying and analyzing rhetorical devices and analyzing the purpose. HW: Get ready for Benchmark 3

Moving forward We will recap some of her rhetorical devices There are a lot more we won’t cover Our focus today is that You know HOW to analyze devices to explain purpose You can write in a timed environment

What do you need to do? - Annotate What’s stopping you? Hard to listen and annotate at the same time? – Good for you, you’ll be reading the speech for B3 Don’t know the devices? – you need to study Don’t want to? – that just makes it harder on you Something else? – LMK know so I can help you truth

Anaphora She closes with the anaphora “North” What is “North” (according to her speech) Why does she repeat this? (what is she emphasizing) Why is it important? How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave?

Anaphora How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? Anaphora is used to stress and emphasize that change is possible with practice. By continuing to strive forward (“North”) we can make the world a better place. The change she’s calling for is paid parental leave; this is the path forward to accomplishing this goal

Antithesis Why does she point out, “our hardships were the stuff of other family’s dreams.”? Why does she need to contrast her family’s privilege with others? How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave?

Antithesis How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? She contrasts her family’s hardships with other families to demonstrate that many people can benefit from paid paternal leave. If her family would have greatly benefited from paid leave, families who are worse off would need it even more.

Rhetorical question What is the purpose of including rhetorical questions? How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave?

Rhetorical question How does this help her advocate for paid parental leave? She is stressing the effects of this problem, and by highlighting it as a problem, she is drawing attention to the need to fix it. Paid parental leave is the best solution

Benchmark 3 asks you to do 3 things Identify devices on your own Explain how they help the speaker achieve her purpose Write in a timed setting

Timed Writing – what you need to do Know the structure – use ICE as a reminder Generate your thoughts – ask yourselves the questions I ask you Practice, practice, practice Don’t freak out, but don’t waste time either

Have a plan Know the purpose! Ask yourself: What are they talking about? Are they informing or persuading? Don’t overthink it! Know the devices you’ll use Look at your annotations Determine the strongest selections Which ones MOST relate to the purpose Which ones you feel the most comfortable with

Writing process – thesis Title + author + 3 devices+ purpose How to do this quickly? Plan it out! When you have an outline, this has already been decided

ICE quotes Topic sentence [Author] uses [device] to [convey purpose] This should go quickly because it’s basically your thesis statement

I – Introduce Context (1-2 sentences) Quick background – what is the topic of this speech? Who is the speaker? What is the problem? What does the speaker want to do to fix/change it? This is the speaker’s purpose (what she want to persuade/convince you of) This should take you 3-5 minutes Since this is comprehension, it’s just showing you know what the person is talking about; don’t over think it!

C- Cite evidence Same system as before (paraphrase what immediately precedes your evidence) Internal citation – (author’s last name) Make sure you use a blended sentence! This should take you 2-3 minutes; you’re just copying evidence

Explain evidence Remember! No 1st/2nd person pronouns (instead, use “one” or “the audience” or “a person/people”) Explain evidence Explain device What is the device, and how is it being used? Refer to specifics! Explain purpose How does help the author to get the audience to do what she wants? This is where you should spend the bulk of your time Shortcut – devices don’t change! If you study/review ahead of time, you’ll be familiar with how devices work Writing becomes hard when it’s the first time you do it; the more you review, the easier it is (this is why I post my stuff online)

Repeat this step for next 2 pieces of evidence Remind yourself to ICE Ask yourself these questions Use your outline

Concluding statement – restate thesis Use a conclusion transition As a result In conclusion Therefore Recap how her purpose was achieved

What do you want to do Monday? Go over teacher examples Talk more about devices and how they individually achieve purpose More timed writing Something else related to Benchmark 3?
