Entrance Ticket January 8, 2014 1.) From 1925 to 1945, Reza Shah ruled Iran. What major changes did he implement to the culture of Iran? He banned reading and closed down the universities in Iran. Reza Shah modernized Iran by building roads, railroads, healthcare and universities. To enforce his masculine authority, he forced women to wear veils in public at all times. Reza Shah emphasized education by requesting highly trained teachers. 2.) What was NOT evidence of Shah Reza Pahlavi’s interference with the life of Iranian Muslims? He encouraged people to dress in the western style (shorts, skirts, short sleeve shirts) He granted equal rights to women, which allowed men and women to become friends. He forced Muslims to pray at least five times a day. He pushed for higher education to the wealthier citizens. 3.) As a result of Shah Reza Pahlavi’s leadership, how did the citizens feel about him? The citizens loved Shah Pahlavi. The citizens hated Shah Pahlavi. The citizens would die for Shah Pahlavi. The citizens missed his father, Reza Shah.

Ahmad Shah a member of the Parliament. Reza Shah and Ahmad Shah were cousins of Marjane’s father. Ahmad Shah is Marjane’s great grandfather. 2.) According to the novel, what is a demonstration? A demonstration is when Parents talk to the principal about their children not being in school. A demonstration is when members of the community rebel and protest outside in a large crowd. A demonstration is a parade where Reza Shah executed political prisoners. A demonstration is a place where women can take off their veils to demonstrate their beauty. 3.) On page 22, Marji was informed that her grandfather was a Prince. Why did he not become king? He became a solider. He became an emperor. He lost his power and became a peasant. He became educated and became a communist.

Citizens in some cases would be murdered. Citizens would be tortured. 2.) How did Ayatollah Khomeini gain power? Ayatollah murdered Pahlavi with poison during dinner. Ayatollah manipulated the parliament and took over while Pahlavi was on vacation. Pahlavi was ill and asked him to reign as leader of Iran. The citizens of Iran appointed Ayatollah as leader. 3.) Due to Ayatollah Khomeini’s changes in Iran, why did Marji’s family adjust? The family was use to living a westernized life Marji’s family was not Islamic. The family enjoyed drinking and was forbidden to drink at certain hours of the day. The family actually fled with their neighbors seeking a modern society.
